The past two days I have been volunteering in the childcare center at the hospital. This involves listening to and instructing children who merely giggle at my Portuguese and laugh at my attempt to teach them songs in English.

On Wednesday I was introduced as Tia. The director then looked at me and said in Portuguese, "Ruth, you can converse with them or whatever you want, they are yours" and walked away. Uh, um, ok, well ... the first thing that popped into my head was a song I learned at North Anderson Community Church Presbyterian.

Kids of the Kingdom. That's what we are.

We love Jesus. (clap) We love the Lord.

Easy enough, right? WELL. I resorted to teaching numbers in English by drawing Hopscotch on the pavement. I ended up just barley managing to keep them from getting hurt.

Today the challenge was to keep the children out of the "falling wet cement zone." I came away with a few battle scars.

Tomorrow is a new day. I will try to teach the song again with the help of one of the Brazilian teachers. She is interested in helping the children learn the song for chapel. They attend and sing at chapel every Tuesday morning.
